Mathematical modeling in medicine, sports, and the environment 7:00P.M., February 13, 2008, Willey Hall 125 Alfio Quarteroni (École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, Lausanne, Switzerland and Politecnico di Milano, Milan, Italy) Mathematical models are enabling advances in increasingly complex areas of engineering and technology. Recent develoP.M.ents in multiscale geometrical modeling have opened the way to progress in modeling such complex systems as the human circulatory system and the climate system. Professor Quarteroni leads a team which has harnessed mathematical modeling to design improved cardiac surgical interventions and to optimize the design of the twice winning America's cup yacht Alinghi. He will talk about this work, and their efforts to confront some of the great environmental challenges that face us.- published: 05 May 2014

View more information on the DOE CSGF Program at http://www.krellinst.org/csgf Smart designs of drug molecules and pharmaceutical formulations can target treatments to specific tissues, reduce side effects, and improve patient quality of care. Computational models for evaluating pharmaceutical formulations can narrow the range of experiments needed to identify successful designs by predicting performance, thus reducing development time and driving down costs. Models coupled with sophisticated process control strategies allow for careful manufacturing monitoring to reduce materials and energy waste and adhere to quality standards. I will overview mathematical modeling efforts in several pharmaceutical domains and highlight work related to predicting drug release from controlled-release formulations that administer medicine over extended periods with a single dose. I will show how coupled, nonlinear partial differential equations can be used to capture the complex dynamic interactions between simultaneous chemical reactions and mass transfer. I will describe mathematical techniques that can reduce the system size from thousands of equations to just a few while still resolving biodegradation of the pharmaceutical formulation that strongly influences drug release dynamics. These techniques can help design improved controlled-release formulations.- published: 21 Aug 2013

PROGRAM: School and Discussion Meeting on Population Genetics and Evolution PROGRAM LINK: http://www.icts.res.in/program/PGE2014 DATES: Saturday 15 Feb, 2014 - Monday 24 Feb, 2014 VENUE: Physics Auditorium, IISc, Bangalore Just as evolution is central to our understanding of biology, population genetics theory provides the basic framework to comprehend evolutionary processes. Population genetics theory allows quantitative predictions of evolutionary processes, integrating mathematical and statistical concepts with fundamental biological principles of genetic inheritance and processes such as mutation and selection. Population genetics theory is thus critical to understanding many pressing issues in biology, such as the evolution of antibiotic resistance in pathogens, the formation of new species and the emergence of cooperative and altruistic behaviors. This school aims to expose students and researchers from diverse backgrounds to the basics and the forefront of current research in population genetics. In addition to evolutionary biology students, we welcome students of mathematics, statistics, medicine, and physics who are interested in evolutionary theory. To equip students to think about issues in population genetics, we will first conduct a brief refresher course in mathematics, statistics, and basic biology including evolution and genetics. The remainder of the school will introduce and develop an understanding of population genetics theory and its applications to interesting phenomena such as the evolution of sex and recombination, phenotypic plasticity, polyploidy, and human diversification. The program will conclude with a short discussion meeting in which active researchers will discuss their recent work on aspects of population genetics theory.- published: 02 Apr 2014

Researchers use 3D printers to make models of molecules to study disease
Learn more about the new discoveries researchers are making: http://bit.ly/1fuXneY Digital 3-D images have long been used to visualize molecular structures and illustrate molecular motion. The advent of 3-D printers enabled the printing and handling of precise physical models of proteins and cells. Now, researchers in the Battelle Center for Mathematical Medicine in The Research Institute at Nationwide Children's Hospital are combining the idea of digital time-lapse molecular motion prediction with an actual printed model of that motion — allowing researchers to study the molecule's motion with their fingers. In this video, we've edited out the printer arm to better showcase the model being built.- published: 02 May 2014

Every Cancer Patient Deserves Their Own Equation: Kristin Swanson at TEDxUChicago 2014
Post-Production: Hamid Bendaas | Fire Escape Films (http://www.fireescapefilms.org/) Kristin Swanson, PhD, is a pioneer in the field of Mathematical NeuroOncology, a field that represents a marriage between applied mathematics, clinical oncology, cancer biology, radiology, pathology, and informatics to enable practical clinical tools to benefit brain tumor patients. The Swanson Lab at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine generates data to support new approaches to personalize treatment choices and thus improve the lives of brain cancer patients. The Lab accomplishes the above through the development of patient-specific mathematical models ideally applied to routinely acquired clinical imaging data to generate accurate predictions of disease course and response to therapy in individual patients that can be used to inform novel therapy design. Swanson has been awarded a 2014 Dixon Translational Grant in the category of Innovation for her project, "Patient-Specific Mathematical Modeling of Pediatric High Grade Gliomas," which "focuses on the development of a mathematical model that forecasts pediatric brain tumor growth similar to how meteorologists predict a storm's path"; like storms, "each tumor is unique, and the current clinical paradigm of a one-size-fits-all treatment approach does not benefit all patients equally." Swanson received her B.S. in Mathematics, with a minor in Physics, from Tulane University, and her M.S. in Applied Mathematics and PhD in Mathematical Biology from the University of Washington. In 2000, she also completed a Postdoctoral Fellowship at the University of California, San Francisco, in Mathematical and Computational Medicine. Swanson is a Professor and Vice Chair of Research in the Department of Neurological Surgery and a Professor in the McCormick School of Engineering at Northwestern University. She is also affiliated with the Northwestern Brain Tumor Institute and the Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center. -- In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)- published: 21 May 2014

Simon Singh, "The Simpsons and Their Mathematical Secrets" | Talks at Google
Simon Singh, author of the bestsellers Fermat's Enigma, The Code Book, and The Big Bang, offers fascinating new insights into the celebrated television series The Simpsons: That the show drip-feeds morsels of number theory into the minds of its viewers—indeed, that there are so many mathematical references in the show, and in its sister program, Futurama, that they could form the basis of an entire university course. Recounting memorable episodes from "Bart the Genius" to "Homer3," Singh brings alive intriguing and meaningful mathematical concepts—ranging from the mathematics of pi and the paradox of infinity to the origin of numbers and the most profound outstanding problems that haunt today's generation of mathematicians. In the process, he illuminates key moments in the history of mathematics, and introduces us to The Simpsons' brilliant writing team—the likes of David X. Cohen, Al Jean, Jeff Westbrook, and Stewart Burns, all of whom have various advanced degrees in mathematics, physics, and other sciences. Based on interviews with the writers of The Simpsons and replete with images from the shows, facsimiles of scripts, paintings and drawings, and other imagery, The Simpsons and Their Mathematical Secrets will give anyone who reads it an entirely new insight into the most successful show in television history.- published: 04 Dec 2013
